Chip Flater, National Science Teaching Association (NSTA)

Chip Flater is the Director of Information Technology at the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), where he leads the organization’s digital transformation and data modernization efforts. A lifelong learner and graduate of Virginia Tech’s Master of Information Technology program, Chip is dedicated to advancing innovation, cybersecurity, and data-driven decision-making within mission-based organizations.

 

At NSTA, he has spearheaded major initiatives including the launch of Atom, the association’s AI-powered member assistant, agentic AI product development, the modernization of its Microsoft 365 and Azure environment, and the development of a comprehensive data governance framework. His work has enhanced security, reduced redundancy, and empowered staff with integrated, intelligent tools that improve operational efficiency and member value.

 

Before joining NSTA, Chip held IT leadership and cybersecurity roles with the American Counseling Association, where he strengthened systems integration and compliance capabilities. He is recognized for his strategic vision, technical expertise, and commitment to using technology as a catalyst for organizational agility and continuous improvement.
